From Atrophy to Astonishing!

June 25 was my half birthday. I am 71.5 years young. I said to Tom when we were strength training the other day, "Wow. I've gone from atrophy to astonishing!" We talked about all the equipment I used to use to compensate for the faulty connection between nerves and muscles as a result of paralytic polio that I contracted at age 5 after I was diagnosed with Post-Polio Syndrome in December of 2006. I had forgotten that we bought weighted utensils so that I could bring the spoon or fork to my mouth to eat. I now use conscious movement and concentration when I eat; sometimes when eating soup I need to use my left hand to steady the soup spoon until the connection is made. I had a tub chair because I was unsteady in the shower; it was also a tool for energy conservation. I had a toe up leg brace and cane for mobility, occasionally using a wheelchair when in the grocery store or to travel by plane. It was a challenge to cut my own toenails because of my lack of flexibility and unsteady hands. I had to brace myself against the sink to get off of the toilet seat and needed assistance to get off of the couch. At 53, I was old before my time. I remember the day we put everything outside when I no longer needed them.

In February of 2007, after getting still and asking for Divine Guidance, I discovered the gift of poetry in my soul. Although I knew about the power of the mind/body connection from Bernie Siegel, MD, I did not realize at the time that the portal to healing was opening before me. The first poem I wrote, "Running the Race" foreshadowed my 2009 Boston Marathon run. Isn't that astonishing?

In December of 2014, my left knee sustained a serious injury. The MRI indicated a whole host of issues. The physiatrist told me that I would need a total knee replacement in a few years and to stop running or cap my distance at a 5K. He told me that the left gastroc muscle had atrophied as a result of childhood paralytic polio. "There's nothing you can do about that and that's in part what caused the knee injury. It's been that way for years."

I was so fortunate and deeply grateful to meet a chiropractor who had Candace Pert, Ph.D. as an instructor in chiropractic school. He was also dialed into the  work of Dr. Joe Dispenza and his book, "You Are The Placebo."  We used chiropractic, KT tape, Theraband Stabilizers, a revamped strength training program and the mind/body connection through visualization and the mirror neuron system as explained by Dr. David Hamilton in his free weekly newsletter, "Better You. Backed by Science." It's incredible to now have the science to understand how I've been able to heal. I went on to run the 2016 Bermuda Half Marathon, the 2016 Hyannis Marathon Weekend 10K and the Bermuda Half Marathons 2017 and 2018. In 2021/2022 I had a setback in my healing journey after an adverse response to the 2nd COVID vaccine. But true to form, I did a virtual 5K on 1/1/2023; the comeback is always greater than the setback! To celebrate turning 70 in 2023, I set my sights on the goal of the 2024 Bermuda 10K. Although I was a DNF in Bermuda, on May 4th as in May the Fourth Be With You, I went out and went the distance of a 10K again. Astonishing!

I'm in a joy filled new training cycle for the 2026 Hyannis Marathon Weekend 10K. I had an astonishing experience during one of my early morning meditations. I embodied myself as the young, lithe ballerina from Miss Patricia's ballet class before I contracted paralytic polio at the age of 5 and a half years old. I remembered every detail of going up the stairs to the 2nd floor (think of the song "At the Ballet" from "A Chorus Line"). My friends and I giggled and chatted as we put on our Capezio ballet shoes that I carried in my patent leather Capezio case.

My leotard was under my clothes. As we took off the outer layers of our clothes, we were transformed into Miss Patricia's ballerinas. It was all business once we entered the room with the lacquered floor, barres and mirrors. I loved the music, the movement, and the rhythm of moving as one with my classmates. As much as moving as one for 3-5 year olds would allow that is.

"All I ever needed was the music, and the mirror and the chance to dance for you." In June 1959, my world crumbled around me as I contracted paralytic polio. The dancer within me was resurrected through my poetry and now in my mind's eye through visualization as I meditate.

Ellen Langer has written a brilliant book, "Counter Clockwise: Mindful Health and the Power of Possibility." In another recent, "Better You. Backed by Science" free newsletter, Dr. David Hamilton summarizes the details of the study.

"In 1979, Langer invited a group of men in their 70s to spend a week at a retreat designed to resemble life 20 years earlier – 1959.

But they weren’t just reminiscing – they were asked to be who they were back then.

Langer’s hypothesis was: “If we put the mind back 20 years, would the body reflect this change?”

The results of the study were astonishing!

In addition to embodying the ballerina I was before I contracted paralytic polio, I am using anchor memories of all the races I have run since I became a most unlikely runner in 2008. I am focused and disciplined on training days and rest days. I have two mantras: "My body recovers with ease" and "The body believes what the mind can conceive."  During my meditations, I focus on visualization and express gratitude and love to my body for all it has given me and continues to give me.

A half birthday which just happens to coincide with being almost halfway through the year is a great time for reflection.  What a joy to celebrate 18 years of healing and going from atrophy to astonishing.

My Master Electrician

I am going through my previous books to create a new book called "Running the Race: Inspirational Poetry From the Heart of a Warrior". It's an incredibly wonderful creative endeavor as I reflect on my healing journey and will be able to inspire others juxtaposing poetry with prose.

In February of 2007, after the diagnosis of Post-Polio Syndrome, a progressive neuromuscular disease, I got still and asked for Divine Guidance. I was told to prepare to spend the rest of my life in a wheelchair and to expect an accelerated decline in functioning as I aged. It was a cold, dark February evening and I was home alone grappling with the dark night of mind, body and soul.

A poem, 'Running the Race' flowed out of me. My pen became my Divining rod for healing as a spigot was turned on in my soul. Poetry poured out of me healing the past through poems about forgiveness and gratitude for all of my experiences finding the gifts and treasures inside the challenges. I created a future very different than the one being predicted for me by Western Medicine.

While rereading "Feel the Heal: An Anthology of Poems to Heal Your Life," I came across the poem, "Release". How amazing that before I had full awareness of what I was creating through my poetry, I was harnessing the power of the mind/body connection to heal the once devastating effects of childhood polio and trauma. I imagined God/Divine Intelligence/Source as my Master Electrician.

Over a decade later, in 2018, Dr. David Hamilton included my story in his Tenth Edition of How Your Mind Can Heal Your Body with the title, "Mary's Story: My Master Electrician."

When I first set out on my journey to heal my life, taking a leap of faith leaving behind my 20 year career as an award winning social worker at the VA Outpatient Clinic in Boston, I knew about the work of Bernie Siegel, MD.  His books and words of encouragement through the years, gave me hope that I could heal. He supported me through my 2009 Boston Marathon run and I believed I was off and running (pun intended) on my journey of transformation.

In December of 2014, I was stopped in my path by a very serious knee injury. I briefly returned to Western Medicine to see what needed to be healed. I found my way to a chiropractor who introduced me to the work of Dr. Joe Dispenza. His book, "You Are the Placebo" turbocharged my healing journey. In 2017, the Heal Documentary was released which is how I came to know the work of Dr. David and many other mind/body luminaries.

David shined the spotlight on the science behind what I was doing and had done through poetry and visualizing meditations!

There are so many studies confirming how the brain cannot tell the difference between real and imaginary. As I imagined being out of my leg brace, running and feeling free in my body; as I felt the Master Electrician healing the effects of trauma and polio, my body responded with new neuromuscular connections, growing a new gastroc muscle and being able to go beyond previous physical limitations caused by polio and trauma! I was blessed to initially partner with a physical therapist at Spaulding Rehab who believed in the body's tremendous capacity to heal and then a personal trainer who believed in infinite possibilities despite all appearances to the contrary. Here's a link to David's blog from March, 2018 explaining the science behind why visualization works.

When I told my personal trainer that I wanted to run the 2009 Boston Marathon in February of 2008, she told me that I was going to need a pair of running shoes!

Whenever my body is experiencing aches and pains, twinges or muscle spasms, I return to meditations visualizing My Master Electrician doing needed repairs from wear and tear through the years all the while expressing gratitude for the miracle of healing I've been blessed to experience. I use guided meditations from Bernie, Dr. David or whatever Spirit prompts me to focus on during a silent meditation.

I am deeply inspired by looking back at my journey through poetry and prose, knowing that it is going to bless the lives of so many who are looking for a spark to ignite the torch of healing on their path.

Under the Full Moon - Reflections on Unity

Divisiveness has once again dominated the headlines; a virus that can do more harm than the pandemic. I must say that it is quite easy to find myself 'taking sides' and make judgments about what is right or wrong. I can only do what feels right for me and our family and release making judgments on others' choices lest I contribute to this pandemic of divisiveness.

We were struggling with whether or not to get our booster shots. Boston College where Ruth Anne attends graduate school requires it. We decided to schedule appointments as the studies show that immunity wanes after 6 months. There were boosters required for the polio vaccine and many other vaccines for potentially life threatening illness. In my heart, I know had I not had the polio vaccine, I could have experienced more debilitating symptoms as did my friend's mother who was unvaccinated. Collectively we are exhausted from the news of the pandemic especially as we see that Broadway Shows have had to cancel performances and restaurants have had to close due to staff testing positive.

It would be easy to focus on the problems.

After the diagnosis of Post Polio Syndrome, 15 years ago this month, I learned how vital it is to focus on the healing, not on the wounds; on how to make things better rather than focusing on how bad things appear to be.

I started listening to a podcast that I thought would be healing and bring comfort and peace to my quandry about boosters and it only served to leave me scratching my head wondering how is it possible that people criticize people about having immovable opinions which they say are wrong and yet they are doing the same thing.

I turned it off and took a deep breath and then I saw a post that resonated with my heart and soul from Dr. Michael Rocha. He works in New Bedford and dedicates his life to bringing wellness programs to his patients and the community. He started Walk with a Doc in the area, a program promoted by Dr. Vivek Murthy as Surgeon General. He chose to become a physician but continues with his passion for music playing trombone as part of the Buttonwood Brass and Southcoast Brass Band, the latter raises funds for the Boys and Girls Club.

"December 16, 2021
We find ourselves all in an uncomfortable time, again. A prolonged period punctuated by intermittent increases of disease, despair, and disconnect. We are all well beyond what is tolerable regardless of our varied views.
We are seeing our world crumbling again, feeling like we could get together more safely, then cruely, the virus decides otherwise. We are seeing hospitals fill up and feeling the strain in all areas of medicine. Breakthrough cases are disrupting our lives, work, families, and our holidays.
Everyone is angry and burned out. We must realize in the moment, it doesn't seem like the suffering will get better. It will. Why?

Science and compassion for one another will win out despite our exhaustion. Unfortunately, science in this moment is telling us to be more careful and make some short term sacrifices when we feel like we have done this too many times already. There are those out there that can not afford to get the virus and there are those with other medical issues that need care that is being diverted towards resources for COVID.
Vaccines save lives, are safe, and prevent people getting sick enough to be in the hospital or in the ICU. There are some exceptions to these rules but I see this first hand playing out everyday regardless of what is on any news channel or political camp. I don't watch news stations. What I see is real life not virtual. Additionally, masking indoors can make a difference when we are all consistent despite our extreme fatigue from doing this for 2 years.

As for real reasons that we will get through is our friends and family. Yes, in the last week it has been tough and I have felt it, but when that happens, people have shown up. They check in. In turn, we do the same for others. That is how we break this cycle when we take a closer look.

This holiday season, be present even when not physically there and please listen to one another. Pick up the phone or Facetime when you sense someone needs a call. If you are going to get together, consider testing before hand to cut the risk. If you are struggling with mental health, please reach out to your doctors or professionals for help as you are not alone.

May everyone be safe, healthy, and well during these times. May we all find some peace."

I have been focusing my meditations on peace, comfort and ease often times using the guided Meta Meditation from Dr. David R. Hamilton. At the end of the meditation he offers, "And let's send this one out to all sentient Beings. May all sentient Beings be happy. May all sentient Beings be well. May all sentient Beings be safe. May all sentientBeings be at ease." At the end of the meditation he states, "Whatever you do today. Go well and go kindly."

On Friday night I looked out of our window and saw the almost full moon.

Before I fell asleep, this poem flowed out of me:

Under the Moon

We are all One
under the light of the full moon
wintry barren branches frame its beauty
She beams
inviting us to look up.

Divisions must cease
who is right or wrong
transform these wayward passions
come with compassion.

In darkness and silence Source reigns
reign in conflicts

Listen closely to heart’s promptings
prompting us to be light not right
foolishly clinging
digging in

reach out
building bridges
a time to heal.

Judgments fade into the fog
Truth comes into view
a world made whole and new

under the full moon where we are all One.

As the year comes to an end, I will focus on gratitude, healing, possibilities, HOPE, joy, love and peace. I will cherish the moments with loved ones and celebrate my 68th birthday with gusto. I will focus on Unity knowing that underneath it all we have so much more in common than what divides us.

From my heart to yours
