When Turbulence Hits -- Throttle Up Gratitude...

and stay tuned to your DGS (Divine Guidance System)

We did not expect turbulence in our first miles of 2025 but we fastened our seat belts, locked in a lot of gratitude and held each other close. Ruth Anne was recovering from an infected cyst on her back. The last Sunday of 2024, we spent the morning in Urgent Care to have a procedure done but we still got out in the afternoon to get in our miles. With the fog, puddles, and patches of ice around the Reservoir, we opted for an out and back route on Beacon Street. On the way back, I stopped as I saw an angel on the sidewalk. It was the exact same angel Ruth Anne had spotted a few months ago in almost the same spot! It was a sign that we are Divinely protected. A message that would hold us in good stead as we navigated the last week of 2024 and the first week of 2025.

Ruth Anne and I had a wonderful run on New Year's Eve. Tom had been ill for several days with a hacking cough and he needed to stay home and rest. The cough worsened as the week wore on but he went back to work on the 2nd. He took Friday afternoon off from work. I hadn't slept in a few nights because of his cough. I felt depleted despite my best efforts with meditation and self-care so I opted to try to get some sleep downstairs on the couch. I put on a series of visualization meditations to boost my immune system. I heard grunts and a thump and ran upstairs to find Tom on the floor with an altered mental status and a temp of 102.9. My heart raced and I called 911. Ruth Anne and I went into crisis mode getting information for the first responders and praying that Tom would be okay.

Once we learned that they had ruled out a stroke and would continue tests throughout the early morning hours, we came home to pray and get some rest.

Fortunately I had access to Tom's on line medical record and learned that he had Influenza A. The altered mental status was due to encephalopathy due to the virus. We all breathed a sigh of relief that he would need lots of rest and hydration, but would make a full recovery!

On Saturday, Ruth Anne wasn't feeling well She was running a low grade temp with ear pain. She had to change providers because her insurance would no longer cover her previous pcp. Ordinarily we would have gone to Urgent Care close to our home. I stayed close to my DGS to figure out what the next best steps would be. I wasn't feeling well but knew that I was feeling the best out of the 3 of us. Ruth Anne started feeling better by the afternoon  but when she woke up Sunday morning, she suspected she needed antibiotics.

There was one appointment at 8:45 at urgent care, but I needed to have breakfast remembering how important it is to put on my own oxygen mask. At first Ruth Anne said she wouldn't take the appointment but I told her to call back and she could use an Uber. It was definitely a communication from my DGS. Fortunately the appointment was still available.

Ruth Anne had an amazing physician who suspected she had a sinus and ear infection but had to rule out COVID and the flu. They were able to fill her prescription at the clinic pharmacy. We spent the rest of the day resting and feeling gratitude deep in our hearts for good health care, insurance, Uber, antibiotics, caring professionals, a warm home, good food and being together as a family despite feeling under the weather. We were so grateful for the outpouring of prayers from our fellow passengers.

On Monday, my body experienced congestion and a nagging cough but no fever and no signs of any bacterial infections. I did, however, need to reschedule the recording of my podcast interview for The Optimism Institute. My only choice was to surrender to the circumstances and know that everything happens in Divine Timing. Bill Burke's Virtual Assistant is a delight and made the process of rescheduling the interview so easy. With meditation, visualization and rest, I am getting ready for my talk next Wednesday at Cohasset Elder Affairs. I've experienced spasms which has affected my speech; it has happened before when I get a rare upper respiratory virus and is a result of Post-Polio Syndrome. I am bringing compassion and kindness to my body realizing that the turbulence has set into motion this cascade of symptoms. I use my mantras and affirmations trusting once again in my body's tremendous capacity to heal. I focus on feeling grateful for all my body has given me through the years and continues to give me. I remind myself of how I have witnessed my body's process of transformation and healing and most recently, watching the transformation of the once infected cyst on Ruth Anne's back be reduced to a small scar! I feel Divine Love course through my cells riding the waves of emotions and physical symptoms as I eagerly anticipate seeing the seat belt sign turn off.

I look forward to getting back on the roads but know that I need to create time and space for healing in the wake of these recent stressors and upper respiratory infection.

I appreciate that the turbulence we experienced is relatively minor compared to what the people of LA are going through. My gratitude is intensified as I focus on all the blessings in our lives. The other night, Tom and I shared how what we went through could have been so much worse if... We took it to the theater of the absurd and laughed so hard we went into coughing fits.

2025 may not have begun as we hoped and visualized. We certainly did not anticipate trips to the ER, Urgent Care and an upper respiratory virus wreaking temporary havoc with speech and spasms but with the throttle up on gratitude, a close connection to my DGS and being surrounded by the love and warmth of our fellow passengers, we are once again at cruising altitude feeling blessed and grateful.

Feel Free...Have Fun...Finish

As I toe the starting line of the Bermuda Triangle Challenge 10K, I will be doing the best with what I've got. I've consistently trained to take on the 10K taking myself to the edge of pace and endurance. Taper time has served me well to heal up those 'niggles' in my right knee and leg, and continuing to heal the effects from a reaction to the COVID vaccine in 2022. As I take pause from training to let taper time work its magic, I realize how much I do love being outdoors getting in the miles and doing the best with what I've got.

What are my goals for Saturday's 10K?

1) Feeling free to be me knowing that I'll be doing the best I can as one who overcame the challenges of paralytic polio and trauma. I've been clearing out the memories of lugging my leg brace trying to keep up with my peers and embodying feeling proud that I chose to take on this challenge. It's been eight years since I toed the starting line of an in person event. It's been eight years since I've gone a distance longer than a 5K. No apologies are needed for my back of the pack status regardless of who may be part of Saturday's field. After all, they did set the event up as a 10K walk! As I celebrate myself for taking on the challenge to celebrate 17 years of healing and being 70 years old, I know and trust my energy will be infectious. I allow joy to sweep away the fears about the 'time limit' as I envision myself going out there and showing what this body can do! I continuously thank my body for all it has given me. I feel a stirring in my soul remembering my why to spread a powerful message of healing, hope and infinite possibilities!

2) Have fun! I've done 3 Bermuda Half Marathons in 2016, 2017 and 2018. I have cherished memories of having so much fun out on the course. Bermudians invited us in for omelettes and mimosas. The volunteers are incredibly supportive and encouraging. There's music and dancing in the streets. Trusting my training knowing that I will easily come in under 2.5 hours makes way for me to relax and have fun out on the course. When I allow fun to be in the forefront of my thoughts, the fears are whisked away.

3) Finish! While I would LOVE to come in under 2 hours, my goal is to finish feeling fabulous with a huge smile on my face and gratitude in my heart. It does not matter if I am the last finisher to cross the finish line. In my mind's eye, I break the finisher's tape knowing I won my race.

I was told several times throughout my journey, that I should never have started running, that I should stop running and/or cap my distance. I understand that the medical profession is wary about giving 'false hope' and share information based on statistics and case studies. Those are powerful messages to overcome. This quote about optimism is a wonderful way to wash away those messages I received from Western Medicine:

I am infusing myself with motivational quotes as I prepare to take on Saturday's challenge:

It is three more sleeps before the limousine picks us up in the early morning hours to whisk us away to Terminal C. I focus on our flight being on time. As I mentioned, the anticipation and excitement of Race Weekend begins at the gate when Tom and I play our game, "runner or not." We ask fellow travelers, "You running this weekend?" For the first time in 8 years, my answer is 'Yes.' If someone asks me what are you hoping for, I will answer with a BIG smile, to feel free, to have fun and to finish!

Going the Distance: Success is the Only Option!

I haven't gone the distance longer than a 5K since January of 2018 when I ran my 3rd consecutive Bermuda Half Marathon. I knew I needed to take time off from going any distance farther than a 5K to give my body a chance to recover after running 3 half marathons in 3 consecutive years! After the pandemic and my setback in 2021/2022, I was incredibly grateful for all my body had given me against all odds given my history of polio and trauma and the diagnosis of Post-Polio Syndrome.  I was content to be on the sidelines with the proverbial #morecowbell.

While Ruth Anne was encouraging me to take on a new goal, I recalled an Op-Ed written by my beloved physiatrist, Dr. Eugene Moskowitz in the New York Times. He was my doctor after I contracted paralytic polio at the age of 5.

Caution and Hope On Polio 'Signs'
Published: March 3, 1985
I read with interest the article entitled ''A Group for Polio Survivors Who Have New Symptoms'' (Feb. 10).

Having supervised the rehabilitation of poliomyelitis patients at Grasslands Hospital during the epidemics of the 50's and 60's, probably including the ''then'' infants mentioned in the article, I would like to add a word of caution and even hope as an afterthought. Firstly, there is no reason to suspect deterioration in the nerve cells in the spinal cord. After 30 years, one must accept some loss of endurance, increased fatigue and even some discomfort induced by other unrelated medical problems. This is true in the athlete with repeated injuries, in the obese person with back problems and even in the jogger with foot ailments.

Any individual with paralytic disability in an extremity will experience the normal process of ''wear and tear'' except that it may be more difficult to adjust to it. Just as one learned to compensate for the initial impairment so must one adjust to the later, more subtle changes rather than develop an emotional hang up of being a ''polio victim.'' ~EUGENE MOSKOWITZ, M.D. Mount Vernon

I re-read two articles written about my Boston Marathon journey that appeared in The Brookline Tab. It was a wonderful opportunity for me to reboot my confidence about taking on the Bermuda Triangle Challenge 10K. While there were moments when the pain and fatigue seemed overwhelming at times, I knew in every fiber of my being that I would cross the finish line of the 2009 Boston Marathon.

After last week's speed workout and training on the Newton Hills, I was the most sore and tired I'd been during this training cycle. I noticed every ache and pain which sent me into a "I don't know if I can do this" state of mind.

I referenced the notes I took from Deena  Kastor's book, "Let Your Mind Run." I was reminded that there's no such thing as over training, only under resting. I realized that I need to increase the time I spend with my heating pad, meditating in the afternoon and being mindful of what I say 'yes' to in doing errands and household chores. From all of the work I've done during my 17 year healing journey, I know that the body responds to the messages I send. Two of my favorite quotes are, "The fatigue was there but I didn't claim it," during training and "When my mind talked, my body listened." She talks at length about the biochemistry of belief in the context of performance and injury recovery. "What you believe about the biochemistry of your body, it unquestionably obeys and manifests it." I experienced this reality on so many occasions throughout my healing journey.

Deena distinguishes the difference between force and power. "Force has counter force. Power flows from giving body time to adapt to fitness by building it." I need to ease up on the throttle and dial back my pace balancing hard and easy workouts. On a subconscious level, I was feeling the anxiety of being at the back of the pack remembering what it was like to be left behind lugging my leg brace. It's amazing how those old feelings get reawakened in the context of a new challenge. It's a wonderful opportunity to heal, transform, evolve and grow.

Deena invites us to do exercises after she shares her amazing story with the reader. I did the exercises a few months ago and brought them out to help imprint my beliefs about my success in Bermuda:

Goal: Cross the finish line of the Bermuda 10K on January 13th 9:00am-11:10am Bermuda time

Why: Transcend limits and share what's possible with others despite a diagnosis and a setback

Affirmations:

I am a Bermuda 10K finisher.

I have the strength and determination to do this.

I have the persistence and discipline.

I believe in my healing.

I believe I can do this based on all my successes from past events.

I trust what the Race Director told me.

I enjoy the journey and the process of meeting this new challenge.

I believe my abilities can improve through effort. I shift from worry, doubt and fear to confidence, belief and trust as I get reacquainted with my body as we go the distance once more. Why? Because success is the only option.

Sweat Cleanses From the Inside Out

Tom had to work this weekend on a special project that required ongoing attention throughout the weekend. I am so grateful he has this wonderful job that he enjoys especially as a 71 year old. Two years ago at this time we were wondering what was going to happen after Tom took his leap of faith leaving behind his 7 year Boston College career as a Systems Administrator. Would he get a 'retirement' job or would he continue to work in technology? We weren't sure but we were sure that the job at BC was no longer fulfilling and the stress was taking a toll on his health.

We had to get up extra early on Saturday to ensure that Tom would be back home in plenty of time to monitor the system he was upgrading. It was a win/win since summer decided to linger well into September this year. The heat and humidity was palpable even at 7:30 in the morning!

We had another 5 miles on tap on the road to the Bermuda Triangle Challenge 10K. As sweat poured, I made sure to hydrate and to also be mindful of my nutrition. I thought that we would have to dial back our pace but I kept a pace consistent with what we have been doing in recent weeks.

Ruth Anne continues to heal from an infection making her way back to wellness. We know that it can take time for med changes and for the body's natural ability to heal to take effect. I know that we can't rush the healing process although at times it seems to be painfully slow for everyone especially Ruth Anne.

Tom and I savor our training time together. We are unplugged and out in nature which nourishes our mind, body and soul. We always take time to soak in the beautiful surroundings of the Reservoir. We paused as we saw a solo goose serenely swimming on the near still water. We watched it turn around with such ease and grace; a reminder that we need to be in the flow accepting all that is right now going with the current of life.

We were grateful for the cloud cover for most of our run. When the sun came out, the heat and humidity really kicked in but fortunately we had only a mile left to run. Our emotions while Ruth Anne finds her healing path were getting wrung out with the sweat. Tom and I used Louise Hay's affirmation while we got in our miles: All is well. Everything is working out for my highest good. Only good can come out of this. I am safe. Louise recommends using it to clear away worries during a challenging situation to allow the Universe to create the solution. We shifted our attention to how Ruth Anne was when her mental status cleared and how Ruth Anne is when she is well saying a prayer "May Ruth Anne be happy. May Ruth Anne be safe. May Ruth Anne be well. May Ruth Anne be at ease!" It's amazing how troubles and worries are released out on a run in nature while sweat pours.

On our way home we were blessed to see two dear neighbors who hold Ruth Anne close in their hearts and prayers. We paused our Garmins to take time to chat with them and soak up their love and support.

One of the things I love about a sultry end of summer sweaty run is to feel the sweat continuing to pour even after the run has ended. George Sheehan has so many incredibly wise quotes about life and running. It's true what he said about sweat. Sweat cleanses from the inside out in a way no shower possibly can!

Another 5 miles deposited in the Bank of Bermuda. Let the excitement build about being a part of Race Weekend. I am always in awe of how the Universe speaks to me and sends me messages and signs. I 'just happened' to see on Instagram that the Grotto Bay, the property where we planned to stay was doing extensive renovations that would not be completed until Spring of 2024. I called to find out that the renovations would affect food service. We planned to have our pre-race breakfast at 6:30 at their Coffee Shop which is now closed. Breakfast wouldn't be served until 7:30 and they were not sure where they were going to serve breakfast.

We decided to pivot and stay just for race weekend instead of the week long stay at Grotto Bay. We easily changed our flights. We are going to stay at the host hotel in Hamilton at the Hamilton Princess Hotel through Marathon Tours. They have a great VIP Package that is going to thoroughly enhance our Race Weekend experience and make Bermuda Race Weekend a true race-cation! Everything always works out for better than the best!

My Morning Run and Letting Go!

Since Monday was a holiday, we got up at 6:30 instead of 5:45. We knew we were going to miss the spectacular sunrise views over the 'small' Reservoir on Route 9 but knew we would still have beautiful views as we ran around the Chestnut Hill Reservoir.

You can see the haze in the 2nd photo that seemed to come and go during our run. What a metaphor for life. As Tom and I navigate Ruth Anne's journey back to wellness, there are moments of clarity and calm. We feel hope and optimism surge through the very cells of our Being. We know and trust that the Treatment Team and Ruth Anne doing everything they can to emerge from this recent flare of PANS and to support her journey back to wellness!

I've been allowing signs from the Universe to help temper the anxiety of the unknown and help heal the trauma of this recent flare. One of my favorite messages came from August 30th:

Running and being out in nature raises my vibration. My heart opened with gratitude in tandem with the clearing haze. I greet negative thoughts with love and compassion. Let's not think about what happened or what might happen but be in the present moment. Is that thought going to help me feel better? If yes then let's keep it. If not then LET IT GO!!! We shared what we've learned with supporting Ruth Anne on her journey to wellness. I am learning what it means to have faith. I am learning what it means to truly let go and always reach for the higher thought. The past does not equal the future and there’s a beautiful peaceful joyful present moment to be had in every moment.

Tom and I talked about all that we have to be grateful for in our lives especially my health. During the run I thanked my body for all that it gives me and the gift of being able to train for another 10K and a 10K in Bermuda. We recalled his Bermuda 10K in 2020 with Ruth Anne. I asked him to review the course with me again to boost my confidence through the power of visualization. Whenever we see a hill when driving or running, I ask, "Is that a Bermuda hill?" Tom consistently replies with "You've got this!" We talked about how supportive and encouraging Ruth Anne has been when we train together and imagine how wonderful it's going to be when she's back on the roads with us feeling healthy and well. We imagined when Tom and Ruth Anne cross the finish line of the Bay State Half and wrap up a year of training and fundraising for Victory Programs.

The morning run before breakfast is comparable to a meditation. We clear out thoughts that contribute to suffering and reach for thoughts and experiences that speak to beautiful possibilities. There's a hill that leads back to our house after we leave the Reservoir. Tom said, "All right! Let's take that hill. Let go of it all, running into a beautiful future of incredible possibilities."

What a charge I felt charging up that hill feeling my strength surge through me. After our morning run I was ready to take on the day feeling hope and optimism that in the invisible and silence miracles are taking place on Ruth Anne's journey to wellness.
