The alarm went off at 6:00am. When we saw the day's weather with predicted highs in the 80's by noontime, we knew we had to get in an early morning run. Re-reading Deena Kastor's book, "Let Your Mind Run: A Memoir of Thinking My Way to Victory," I imagined our early Thursday morning run as a track workout. We drove to the Route 9 Reservoir to have the opportunity to run on a completely flat surface. I wasn't planning on doing any kind of a speed workout but after the first of two miles, I decided it was time to do a time trial for a mile. To be honest, the idea sprang from deep within my soul.
It was a gorgeous morning. The reservoir was still and the reflection on the water looked like a magnificent work of art. The air was relatively cool for an end of June day. Since Tom and Ruth Anne are training for the third half marathon in Ruth Anne's Trilogy of Half Marathons for Victory Programs, they ran in the opposite direction from me for their 3 miles.
We meet up and take our mid-run selfie. I savored the solitude running from the inside out wondering what my body would be able to do without pushing the pace feeling intrigued with being able to feel free moving in my body during an early morning run.
When I trained for the First Run of 2023, I was excited to be training for a virtual 5K after a setback in my running journey in 2021/2022. I decided that I needed to do something to let my body know that once again it wasn't destined to experience limits despite the diagnosis of a progressive neuromuscular disease in December of 2006. I ran the same pace for the mile as I ran in the last mile of the First Runs Virtual 5K. I felt fantastic knowing that my body is building fitness again and is adapting to a new training cycle.
Leaving all of yesterday's worries and problems behind, Thursday morning's run opened the portal to continued healing and infinite possibilities as I embodied being an athlete training for the Bermuda 10K in January.
